Change of Name August 17 2016

Corner Hotel Alexandra - 1920s

The Commercial Hotel Alexandra is changing back to the original name, The Corner Hotel Alexandra.

The name change reflects the history of the hotel and Alexandra, the hotel’s location on the main corner in town, and the restoration and re-energisation of the hotel under the current owner’s, Tim and Henri Buckley.

Henri Buckley said: ‘The hotel is not for travelling salesmen any more. It exists for the people of Alexandra and Murrindindi and visitors to the District.’

The Corner Hotel Alexandra was established when Alexandra was founded during the Gold Rush in 1866. The hotel traded as The Corner Hotel for over 50 years throughout the hotel’s most vibrant period as a key social and commercial center of Alexandra.

The current hotel was built in 1873 (the current balcony added in 1935), after the “Fire of 1872” destroyed the original 1866 building. It has had many additions since then.

In 1873 the new Corner Hotel opened to great fanfare with the Alexandra Times (now the Standard) reporting (27/12/1873):

‘The parlours have an air of comfort and luxury rarely met with outside of large cities. In outward appearance the building resembles a gentleman's private establishment, and when looked at from any point of view stands prominently forward as the greatest architectural ornament of Alexandra.‘

The newspaper also quoted from one of the toasts at the 1873 opening grand ball and supper:

‘With such a hotel, such a landlord, and such jolly good people, Alexandra could not fail to become a great and prosperous place. A railway was wanted to make the Goulburn the 'Thames of Victoria". ‘

Tim Buckley said: ‘With the change of name back to The Corner Hotel Alexandra, let’s hope we can recapture some more of the fun, energy and optimism of the halcyon days of this great old hotel.’

The hotel’s name was changed in around 1917 from The Corner Hotel to The Commercial Hotel, to reflect the importance at the time of the many commercial travellers who stayed and conducted business from the hotel in the first half of the 20th Century.

The current owners, Tim and Henri Buckley, believe that the name change back to The Corner Hotel honors the history of the hotel and Alexandra, as well as better reflecting the hotel as part of the Alexandra community situated on the main corner in town.

The Buckleys have owned the hotel since 2007 and operated it since 2013. They have fully renovated the upstairs accommodation and the bottleshop, and continue to improve the hotel under heritage advice.

Today the Corner Hotel Alexandra comprises a busy restaurant and bar, function rooms, lovingly restored clean and comfortable accommodation and a full service Thirsty Camel drive through bottleshop. The hotel focuses on local produce.

In November 2015 the Herald Sun awarded the hotel one of the best chicken parmigianas in Victoria (second by ½ point out of 50), and said the chips were probably the best they had ever eaten.

The Corner Hotel Alexandra presents a 3 part menu with something for everyone: A Parma Menu with 17 styles of huge and juicy free range chicken parmas (try the new Carbonara Parma), plus a seasonal Specials Menu (try a beautifully fresh Goulburn River Trout from just upstream) and a great menu of Pub Favorites (try a juicy 300g scotch fillet).

The hotel promotes music and supports local musicians, with Open Mic Night every Tuesday night from 8pm, and bands on many weekends.

The Corner Hotel Alexandra now employs around 25 local staff, sources food and beverages from local suppliers, and sponsors many community organisations and events, including the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show and The Alexandra Rebels Football & Netball Club.
